Dubliner's - Editorial Design

OVERVIEW
This project was a redesign of s selection of short stories from James Joyce’s Dubliners. The final product was an 8" by 5" hardcover book printed through Blurb.
SOLUTION
The design was inspired by the social media platform “Tumblr”. The idea was to capture the feeling of Tumblr with the James Joyce stories by altering the content of the designs based off of the feel of each individual story and protagonist. This is to bring James Joyce’s writing into modern times and to appeal to the younger generation who are much more well versed with social platforms than stories, like the ones from Dubliners, which are from a very different style of life.
PHOTOGRAPHY
The images are meant to capture the feelings of the protagonists of the current story, as if they were posting that photograph on their own blog. The photography included in the book were all taken by myself and included because they featured journeys parallel to those throughout the stories.
PULL QUOTES
The pull quotes over the images summarize the feel of sections of the stories in a short quote from the book that could also be seen as the commentary a blogger would post under a photograph on their blog.
ITERATIONS
With each iteration of the cover, I was attempting to capture the feel of “tumblr”, presenting the book as an internet profile. I found because of this, I was focusing too much on the author and not enough on the stories.

THE FINAL COVER
Once I decided to make the cover about the stories, I reflected the journey that the characters go through with the typography and imagery.
LAYOUT ITERATIONS
Each story is laid out using the same basic design meant to reflect the design of a blog. The stories are introduced on their own “homepages” and are followed by both the content of the short story as well as images with pull quotes. The homepage includes a navigation bar to give the reader the feedback of which story they are on, a background photograph to simulate a web browser’s wallpaper, and the introductory sentence that could be read as the bloggers “About Me” section.
